Mix CD #7 - City Of Lost Souls

There's no theme to the mix this time, just songs I've enjoyed lately. My car is in the awkward position of being too old to have a USB port and too new to have a cassette deck (that I have a cassette/iPod adaptor for) so, to listen to music, I have to play CDs. Instead of having one long, convenient playlist like I used to, I now have to burn a load of CD mixes and listen to music that way. All of these songs have come from recent driving CDs and are songs I thought would go well on here, hopefully you'll like them. Some of them maybe. Just that one over there then. Oh piss off.

If you do download and listen to this mix then let me know what you think cos Feedback is
nice. Same goes for any of the previous mixes.

The End - City Of Lost Souls
Taken from the 1991 album Gusto
There are loads of bands around called The End. This particular band were from London and played a mixture of Goth and Hard Rpck with Funk and Psychedelia aspects. Bassist Clovis Taylor ended up in Britrock/Grunge band Headswim if they mean anything to you. Parts of the album have dated horribly and Rook Randle's fake American accent is ill advised but there's also some great songs that don't get overshadowed by the faults.

Muscle Tribe Of Danger & Excellence - Old-School Blood Trial
Taken from the 2013 album Eagles And Chainsaws
This young Stoner Metal band are from Zagreb, Croatia and Eagles And Chainsaws was a surprise find for me in 2013 and was easily my favourite album of the year. This song was their debut single and is a short sharp blast of headnoddyness. You can download their album as Name Your Price (ie Free) on bandcamp. HERE

Fugazi - Public Witness Program
Taken from the 1993 album In On The Kill Taker
There's not a lot to say about this pioneering Punk/Post Hardcore/Emo band. Anyone with a passing interest in alternative music knows of Fugazi, they've influenced so many bands over the years. The last I heard they were recording again but I've not heard anything more since. It took me years to realise they had two lead singers, I wondered why Ian MacKaye's voice changed so much between songs!

Kabuto The Python - Skill Set
Taken from the 2011 EP The Kvetch Sessions: I Hate Everything
Kabuto is an American Nerdcore rapper who keeps his face hidden behind a Guy Fawkes mask. This particular song is a list of helpful advice about rapping. I don't listen to a whole lot of Hip Hop but more because I'm not keen on all the posturing/sexism and shootiness rather than the music. Someone who raps about things I can identify with, such as video games, movies, cheeseburgers and being grumpy, is someone who's music I will very much enjoy.

Von Hertzen Brothers - Trouble
Taken from the 2015 album New Day Rising
The first I heard of these three brothers from Finland was when they were announced as support for The Wildhearts a couple of years ago. I got into my head they'd be a Punkish, Rockabilly band but turns out I was completely wrong. They play modern Progressive Rock that's both technical and engaging. I like them a lot. Also, every time I hear the intro to this song I think Paint It, Black is about to come on. It doesn't.

United Magnetics - Act One Scene One
Taken from the 2000 album Reinventing The Fifth Wheel
I don't know much about this New York band other than they have this one album, googling them bring up loads of factories and companies and that the above photo is the only one of the band in existence. Oh and they play intelligent Pop Punk/Post Hardcore alone the lines of Jawbreaker etc.

Thundermother - Roadkill
Taken from the 2015 album Road Fever
This all-female, multinational band play classic Hard Rock in the vein of AC/DC and Motorhead. Not particularly original but well played and Claire Cunningham has a great voice. I really enjoyed this album and they're worth checking out

Psychostick - My Clingy Girlfriend
Taken from the 2011 album Space Vampires Vs Zombie Dinosaurs In 3D
Psychostick are a Comedy Metal band from Arizona. While the songs are pretty funny they're catchy and riff heavy enough to maintain interest once the hilarity has worn off. The theme of this song is fairly self evident.

John Parr - St Elmo's Fire (Man In Motion)
Taken from the 1985 soundtrack of St Elmo's Fire
You know this song, everyone should know this song. It's the greatest ever song to play loud while driving song ever. singalong now: mumblemumblemumblemumble HIGHER AND HIGHHHHER!

You're Pretty - Day
Taken from the 2002 album Beautiful Accident
You're Pretty were an Alternative Metal band that were sadly before their time. Vocalist Beth had a powerful voice and guitarist Steven had an unconventional and interesting playing style. A lot of their songs were ballads, or least slower songs, but when they did kick in it had much more impact. This song is a good example of that. Lyrically it's about the grief and guilt you feel when someone is dying. It's a pretty song if a little morbid. Beth left after this album and I don't know what happened to any of them, which is a shame.

The Main Grains - We're Happy Round Here
Taken from the 2016 Mini-Album Don't Believe Everything You Think
The new band from former The Wildhearts bassist/The Yo-Yo's frontman Danny McCormack and is very much in the style of the latter. Hefty Street Punk with a dose of a Rockabilly thrown in. I'm looking forward to a proper album

Slipknot - Get This
Bonus track on the digipak version of their 1999 album Slipknot
A lot of the Nu-Metal bands that were so exciting and pioneering back in the nineties sound horribly dated these days. Slipknot have always managed to stay fairly relevant and produce great (if you like this sort of thing) music though. This is a short, expletive filled song that was about as heavy as they got back then.

Faunts - M4 Part 2
Taken from the 2006 ep M4
Back in 2007, this song played over the end credits of the Sci-Fi RPG Mass Effect. A game I played a lot. I loved it and looked into the interestingly named Canadian Electronic Rock band who played it. Sadly the rest of their stuff isn't half as good as this song.

Danny Kaye & The Andrews Sisters - Civilization
Taken from the 1947 single Civilization
Whilst we're on the subject of RPG's I played a lot, Fallout 3 is another. One of the sources of entertainment whilst you're fighting off Bandits, Deathclaws, Giant, Fire-Breathing Ants, Killer Robots and, er, Molerats is a radio station run by a maverick DJ by the name of Three Dog. In between news bulletins of goings on in the Washington Wastelands he plays a small selection of songs all from the 40's. Presumably that's when the nuclear strikes decimated the world. This daft, slightly racist song is one of the ones he played.

Neko Case - Night Still Comes
Taken from the 2013 album The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You
I don't really know how I got into Neko Case, I just seem to always have had some of her CDs. She rose to prominence in the Canadian Indie Rock band The New Pornographers. Personally I never got into that band but I love her solo stuff. It's eclectic mix of Folk, Country, Indie, Blues and a touch of Punk. I'm not too sure what this song is about, depression and suicide seem the obvious choices. Lovely.

Frank Turner - Demons
Taken from the 2015 album Positive Songs For Negative People
It's funny how popular has become since his previous band, Million Dead split. His solo stuff is far removed from their bouncy Post Hardcore but I much prefer it. His newer stuff is getting more Rock than Folk though.

Krux - Omfalos
Taken from the 2003 album Krux
Krux are a Swedish Doom Metal supergroup featuring members of Candlemass, Opeth, Entombed, At Vance, Therion, Arch Enemy and Tiamat among others. They're probably an acquired taste and not for everyone but all three of their albums are pretty good if you're into chuggy, slow riffing. This was the first song of theirs I heard.

Super Furry Animals - Golden Retriever
Taken from the 2003 album Phantom Power
This Welsh Indie Rock band have plowed the furrows of a variety of musical styles throughout their long career but I always liked it best when they forgot the fancy stuff and just rocked. This song is stupid but great.

8stops7 - The Mark
Taken from the 2012 album Fables
This Grunge/Nu-Metal band seem to release an album every few years, just long enough to think they've probably split up. This is from their most recent(ish) album. The first time I heard them was on the in-flight radio on a trip to Australia. I've followed them (not literally) ever since.

Bowling For Soup - I'm Gay
Taken from the 2006 album The Great Burrito Extortion Case
It's a shame that Bowling For Soup will only be known for Girl Are The Bad Guys Want to most people because they constantly release excellent albums full of quality, feel good music and have long eclipsed that song. There's a weird, abrupt end to I'm Gay that sounds like it's bust. It's supposed to be like that apparently.

Seasick Steve - Heart Full Of Scars
Taken from the 2015 album Sonic Soul Surfer
Steve's last album was full of his trademark Blues Boogie songs that get your head nodding and put  smile on your face. The last track a world weary balled about being old called Heart Full Of Scars. It's a beautiful song and a good way to finish this CD
