Mix CD #32 - The Start Of Something Beautiful

Hello and welcome to the thirty second blog and what will very probably be the last one of the year!

It has been quite a while since my last entry, the inexplicably popular, covers mix, six weeks or so I think. Sorry about that, blame The Punisher.

It's back to a themeless mix this time, with a reasonably eclectic collection of songs that I have enjoyed and would also like you to enjoy. I would also like it if you read the banal drivel I've written about each track too, but don't feel you have to or anything.

As I mentioned in the Facebook group, the next mix will be my top albums of 2017 and I'm aiming to have it done and published at some point in January but if I get it done earlier then there's no point hanging about and I'll stick it up.

In the meantime, them songs to enjoy, look.

Mix CD #31 - Covers Vol. III: I Don't Like Mondays

It's been quite a while since the previous Covers mix, over a year in fact. I was wondering about doing another one when I stumbled onto the above photo of Brenda Spencer whilst Tori Amos' version of I Don't Like Mondays was playing and took it as a sign that the time was right. It turns out that might not actually be the case!

Brenda Spencer was the 16 year old girl who went on a shooting spree at a school in 1979  the inspiration for The Boomtown Rats' most famous song. After being asked why she shot those people she simply replied: "I don't like Mondays".

I did wonder about postponing this blog for a week or two following the shooting in Las Vegas this week as it might seem to be in poor taste. I decided against it in the end as it's just a little unfortunate in its timing and only has a passing connection to that awful incident anyway. No offense is at all intended and my apologies if you take it that way.

Cheers
Luke

Mix CD #30 - Who Will Sing Me Lullabies?

So here's the thirtieth blog. Is 30 a milestone? It feels like it should be a milestone. It's certainly a lot. I'd regale you with debauched tales of what I got up to on my 30th birthday, only I haven't a clue what I did, completely forgot. Maybe it's because it was such a wild night but more than likely I just spent it playing Halo. Birthdays are rubbish after about 23 or so anyway.

Yeah anyway, the blog. It's the usual mix of new and old. There's some heavy stuff, some Punk, Indie, a little bit of Folk, an even littler bit of Hip Hop. All just things I've liked and wanted to use. As always, you can read what I have t say about each track below and also download the mix if you want too.

The next blog is gonna be another themed mix I've decided. It's been an age since the last Covers mix and I have a huge batch of prospective tracks to use. I've also got a couple of non themed mixes backed up too so I'm good for the time being at least.

I hope you enjoy this one for now though.
Cheers
Luke

Mix CD #29 - When The Devil Creeps In

Hello and welcome to the 29th mix/blog whatnot! After the King's X special last week, it's back to business as usual with just a selection of songs that I've liked and wanted to include. There's a mix of new and old, in the case of CJ Wildheart album, very new as it's not officially released until the end of September.  There's a fair bit of 90's stuff too, inlcuding a couple more from the bundle I dragged down from my attic a while back.

The cover art is a photo that was taken in 1948 of a young Polish girl called Tereska. She was rescued from a Nazi concentration camp and taken to a hospital for the 'emotionally disturbed'. In the photo above she was asked to draw a picture of home.

As always, you can read a little ramble about each song below and download the mix if you like, there's a link after the tracklisting.

Cheers,
Luke

Mix CD #28 - Shot Of Love: The Best Of King's X

It's been a while since I did a themed post, I've been listening to this fine band a lot lately and I figured they'd be splendid candidates for one of these Best Of's's. Unfortunately, I didn't count on how hard it would be but more about that later. Firstly, a little bit about the band for those who might not know of them.

They initially formed in Missouri (soon after they relocated to Texas) in the early eighties, though they didn't release their first album, as King's X, until 1988. At the very core of it, they're a classic Hard Rock trio but with strong ties to Prog Rock. There's also hints of Soul and Funk, particularly in Doug's vocals. Their musicianship is of a flawless standard; Ty is an incredible guitarist and Doug is a wildly influential bassist with a unique playing style. All three of the band contribute lead vocals, to a greater or lesser extent, but the real magic of the band comes when they sing together. Their voices mesh together perfectly and they create lush harmonies that are often compared to The Beatles, though that's a lazy comparison.

At the time of their commercial peak, they stood far apart from their contemporaries, fitting in with neither the Hair Metal or Thrash Metal scenes, on later albums they took slight influences from both Grunge and Nu-Metal during those era's, though never deviating much away from the overall King's X sound.
In their earlier career, they were considered part of the Christian music scene, mostly due to a lot of their lyrics being along a spiritual theme. The band themselves distanced themselves from it somewhat, the feeling eventually becoming mutual when Doug came out as gay in 1998. There's an interesting interview with him about it HERE

(l-r) Ty Tabor, Jerry Gaskill and Doug 'Dug' Pinnick
They've always been a prolific band and have absolute masses of brilliant songs. Whittling them down for a single CD length mix was so hard, I got stuck at around 46 songs, none of which I wanted to get rid of. After a load of swearing and head scratching, I decided I was going to have to be brutal and set to. As a result, there are a lot of songs that should be on this mix that aren't. I'd already used two of my favourite songs, Won't Turn Back and Fine Art Of Friendship on previous mixes which helped, but I also didn't include some of their better known songs like Summerland, King, Pleiades, Black Flag, Fade, Groove Machine, Junior's Gone Wild, Dogman, Pillow, Fool You, A Box, Alone, Pray, etc. I'm sure other big fans of the band will disagree completely with my eventual decisions.

Most albums only have one or two songs included and there's nothing at all from 2000's Please Come Home...Mr Bulbous or any of the new tracks recorded for The Offical Best Of King's X. I also wanted to include something Doug recorded for various tribute albums, The Unforgiven maybe, but no chance. Perhaps I'll do another blog focusing on his many side projects one day. One day.

If I'm being honest, this is more of a Beginner's Guide To King's X than a Best Of and I really hope that those of you unfamiliar with the band will track down some of the albums because you're missing out!

Cheers,
Luke

Mix CD #27 - Strength In Numbers

Hello and Welcome to the current edition of my shitty blog. Prepare your eyes (and ears if you can be arsed) for a feast!

I'd been wanting to use the above photo for a mix for a long time but nothing has really fitted with it. I've been listening to the Ryan Hamilton & The Traitors album a bit lately and the song Strength In Numbers seemed perfect for it as well as being a great song anyway.
Also, I appreciate the irony in the fact that the old dude actually seems like the one in control of that situation, despite the odds.

As for the other songs on the mix, there's the usual mix of songs I have been enjoying, from the punishing Death Metal of Behemoth to the jaunty Cajun Rockabilly of Johnnie Allan. There are a couple of all-female Punk bands and the usual smattering of both '90's Britrock and Prog Metal as that seems to be all I listen to these days,

As always you can read a scintillating little anecdote about each band and/or song as well as download the mix if you want. Both things are below.

Cheers,
Luke

Mix CD #26 - The Music That Nobody Likes

Behold unto thee, yon mix one score and two thrices hath risen! Behold unto thee.

I've actually really enjoyed listening to this mix a lot lately, I mean, I always do enjoy them but I think there are some cracking songs that work well together this time. You might disagree once you've listened to it but that's coo'.

There are also a few bands that I've only recently discovered too, which is nice. I like finding good new music. The Treeherder track, in particular, is one of my favourites of the year so far, you should give it a listen and if you like it, try their album.

As always, there's a link to download the mix and some waffle by me about each song. You can find both things below.

Cheers,
Luke

Mix CD #25 - Do I Need This?

Here is the mighty twenty fifth mix! Only another seventy five and I'll have done a hundred, whoop! I'm not that sure I've got the songs for that, to be honest. In fact, I'm not totally sure I could do another twenty five. Still, it's a milestone of sorts so jolly good and all that.

The mix this time is another with no unifying theme other than "These songs are ace, you should listen to them" and they are and you should. There's a reasonable amount of variety to be had, I guess Erasure and Crypticus don't feature on many things together, but it's all good stuff.

The cover art is a photo of Matthew Shepard, a young gay man who was beaten to death by homophobes in 1998. I loved the photo and it kind of tied in with the Apes, Pigs And Spacemen song so I used both for this mix.

Since I started writing this particular blog last week, there's been the bombing at the Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, the execution of a bus full of Christians, some of which were children, in Egypt, the stabbing to death of two men trying to stop Anti-Muslim abuse in Oregan and another suicide bombing in a church in Israel. The tragedies and atrocities keep mounting and it's getting to be a pretty depressing time, one that's probably not going to get a peaceful conclusion if any.
I guess songs like Do I Need This?, The Struggle and Cathedral are as relatable today as when they were written 15-20 years ago. They shouldn't be.

Apes, Pigs & Spacemen - Do I Need This?
Mary Bell - Waste
The Briggs - Train Of Thought
The Wildhearts - Schizophonic
Drain S.T.H. - I Don't Mind
She Loves Pablo - Ain't No Blossom Here
Blueline Medic - Cathedral
Scott Sorry - Give It
Crooked Saws - Bad Luck
Ned's Atomic Dustbin - Song Eleven Could Last Forever
Amorphis - Shaman
Erasure - Drama!
The Band With Rocks In - She Won't Change Her Mind
Chris Catalyst - I Need You Around
Black Train Jack - The Struggle
The Company Band - Company Man
Devin Townsend - Ocean Machines
Crypticus - Rogues In The Haunt Of Horrors
Sarah Shook & The Disarmers - No Name

There's blurb about each track below and you can download the mix HERE if you need this.

Mix CD #24 - Last Chance To Change

Hello and welcome to the 24th mix! It's not been too long since the last one but as that was an artist specific mix I guess it's been a while since an actual proper mix. Six weeks or so. Anyway yeah, here's another one. As usual it's a collection of tunes that I've been enjoying and thought would fit together nicely.

All of my CD's, of which there are many, are stored away up in the attic, I was up there last week and had a rummage through a couple of crates that were accessible, I dragged out quite a few old albums that I've been listening to and enjoying.
As there's already quite a bit of older stuff on this mix, I've left them off for now but expect songs cropping up over the next couple of mixes. You'll know which they are as it's the kind of uninteresting fact I like to include  in my pointless, rambling anecdotes about each song. Speaking of which you can pore over and enthuse about my latest enscribings below, under the download link

Cheers,
Luke

Mix CD #23 - Here, In My Head: Tori Amos B-Sides & Rarities

I've been wanting to do an artist specific blog for a while now but was unsure who. I was also wanting to get around to another B-sides & rarities mix so I thought I may as well kill two birds with one stone and combine the two themes.
I've been a  massive Tori Amos fan for 25 years now and she's also probably the most prolific non-album track releaserer I know, which makes her perfect for this kind of thing.

I've whittled this list down from easily over 150 tracks that's she's released over the last 25/30 years, and that's not including live stuff or remixes. I've tried to take songs from as wide a spectrum as possible and, in doing so, I've passed over quite a lot fantastic songs in favour of merely good ones. Them's the breaks I guess.

Tracklisting
Baltimore
Take Me With You
Not David Bowie
Sugar
Honey
White Telephone To God
Never Seen Blue
Violet's Eyes
Miracle
Merman
Siren
Forest Of Glass
Mountain
Murder, He Says
A Case Of You

Mary
You'll Be Taken Care Of

As is the norm, I've written a fascinating little anecdote for each track that you can pore over intently below.

Mix CD #22 - That's A Nasty Habit You've Got There

Here we go with mix number twenty two and it's yet another mix with no theme!

I know I explain this every time but you never know when somebody new might read this and anyway, what else do I put? So yeah, these are all songs that have popped up lately that I thought would be good on one of these here mixes. Sometimes a good song pops up on shuffle, other times it's a track that stands out on albums I'm listening to or maybe just from various playlists or whatever.

I think it's a pretty eclectic mix and I've been enjoying listening to it. That's no guarantee you will of course but fingers crossed you'll like something, even if it's just the Queen song...

Mix CD #21 - NSFW

Here's your fuckin' mix you.

As you can see it's awash with profanity and a plethora of naughty words. Everyone knows, swearing is neither big nor clever but can, on occasion, be funny.

I've never really understood people who get incredibly offended at cursing. Everyone does it, maybe some more than others but everyone at some point lets slip a shit, fuck or pissflaps. I swear constantly and don't even realise it half the time. There's a time and place for it to be sure but they're only really words. Maybe the world would be a nicer and less stressful place to live if people didn't get offended by things they don't really need to.

So yeah, it's full of swearing and, depending on where you work, it's probably not advisable to play once you've clocked on.

I narrowed this down from a very large list as you can imagine. Fuck in particular had over a hundred songs to choose from. I could likely have made it even more offensive too as there are plenty of songs with way more swearing in them than the ones I've included but I only wanted songs with bad words actually in the title.

Generally speaking, there are a lot more short, angry Punk songs with swearing in their titles knocking about than there are lengthy, sweeping Prog Rock epics with swearing in theirs. For that reason there are more tracks on this mix than usual. It's gonna take me ages to write up!

Tracklisting
Psychostick - NSFW
The Urge - Drunk Asshole
Frenzal Rhomb - World's Fuckedest Cunt
Regurgitator - I Sucked A Lot Of Cock To Get Where I Am
Snuff - Arsehole
Dick Delicious & The Tasty Testicles - It Was The Tits

Kick Joneses - In A Fucked Up City
MC Chris - I'm A Fuckin' Wizard
The Darkness - Wanker
Dead Kennedys - Too Drunk To Fuck
The Assholes - Eat Shit And Die

Mix CD #20 - Trip To Mars

Hello!

Welcome to the first proper blog of 2017! Also welcome to the 20th mix too. You're probably getting sick of them by now but I'm still having fun so I'm afraid there's still plenty more to come. Ignore at your peril/leisure.

As is the norm, Trip To Mars features songs that I've wanted to include just because I like them a lot. Some have cropped up on shuffle, some are from albums I've been listening to and others on mixes I've made for myself to listen to in the car. There's a wide mix of stuff on offer so, hopefully, you'll find something you like in there.

I've settled on the final tracklisting for the next two mixes so it's just a matter of typing them up. Both are themed and I'm looking forward to sharing them. I'm not online too much in the next week or so but once I'm back you can expect the next blog in a fortnight or so.

Cheers,
Luke

Mix CD #19 - Top Albums Of 2016: Part Two

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you had a good Christmas and all that. Now it's time to suffer some misery and yearn for the pay day that can't possibly still be over a fortnight away. By, January isn't half shit.

So yeah, if you're poor and sad like me then perhaps the second blog featuring tracks from albums that I liked last year will offer some sweet respite? It'll pass an hour or so for you if nothing else.

The first blog can be read HERE if you haven't already seen it and want to.

I've got a few themed blogs planned for the coming year, I was toying with the idea of a Profanity strewn mix and also one with songs of a depression/suicide theme. I should probably do something a little more cheerful too. I'll also likely be doing more mixes of Cover versions, B-sides and Rarities and Band Best Ofs. One thing I've not done yet is a genre specific blog so I might look into that too.

There's plenty to come over the next year then, in fact, the next mix will only be a week or so away hopefully, there's no specific theme for that one but I've about settled on the tracklisting for it. IT'll be the 20th Blog, a milestone!

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this one.

Cheers,
Luke
