Mix CD #21 - NSFW

Here's your fuckin' mix you.

As you can see it's awash with profanity and a plethora of naughty words. Everyone knows, swearing is neither big nor clever but can, on occasion, be funny.

I've never really understood people who get incredibly offended at cursing. Everyone does it, maybe some more than others but everyone at some point lets slip a shit, fuck or pissflaps. I swear constantly and don't even realise it half the time. There's a time and place for it to be sure but they're only really words. Maybe the world would be a nicer and less stressful place to live if people didn't get offended by things they don't really need to.

So yeah, it's full of swearing and, depending on where you work, it's probably not advisable to play once you've clocked on.

I narrowed this down from a very large list as you can imagine. Fuck in particular had over a hundred songs to choose from. I could likely have made it even more offensive too as there are plenty of songs with way more swearing in them than the ones I've included but I only wanted songs with bad words actually in the title.

Generally speaking, there are a lot more short, angry Punk songs with swearing in their titles knocking about than there are lengthy, sweeping Prog Rock epics with swearing in theirs. For that reason there are more tracks on this mix than usual. It's gonna take me ages to write up!

Cheers,
Luke

Psychostick - NSFW
Taken from the 2014 album Revenge Of The Vengeance
The only track on the mix not to contain a profanity in the title but it's the track that gave me the idea for this mix to begin with. It must also hold some sort of record for the most amount of swearing in any one song. See if you can count how many Fucks there are within it. Definitely more than people give about my blog that's for certain!

The Urge - Drunk Asshole
Taken from the 1995 album Receiving The Gift Of Flavor
I first discovered The Urge when they supported Korn in the early nineties. Korn had just released Life Is Peachy and the opening band were a relatively unknown Incubus. They didn't seem to go down too well with the majority of the folk there (just because they had a brass section apparently) But I loved their unique mix of Nu-Metal, Ska and Punk. This speedy song about drink driving, in particular, stuck out.

Frenzal Rhomb - World's Fuckedest Cunt
Taken from the 2003 album Sans Souci
This Aussie punk band had any number of songs to pick for inclusion but I plumped for this song about a very very drunk person, mainly because I didn't have many Cunt songs. In fact, all the songs I have that have Cunt in the title were Frenzal songs. These cunts say cunt a lot.

Regurgitator - I Sucked A Lot Of Cock To Get Where I Am
Taken from the 1996 album Tu Plang...

Another Australian band, this time the mighty Regurgitator, who take a whole mish mash of genres and spew it out in a sound all of their own. This song is from their debut album and is more restrained than a lot of their usual stuff. Bizarrely it was a minor hit in Australia when it was first released. I think the Aussies are a bit more blasé with regards to profanity than most Countries though!

Snuff - Arsehole
Taken from the 1998 album Tweet Tweet My Lovely
Snuff are an enjoyable Cockney hybrid of Punk and Mod Culture. Arsehole is like a lot of their songs in that, on the surface, it's a daft piece of singalong but with a more serious and thoughtful underlying message. To be fair, the message isn't THAT deep in this song but still, the thought's there. It'll also be an educational listen for any non-UK listeners as there are some interesting colloquial insults utilised too.

Dick Delicious & The Tasty Testicles - It Was The Tits
Taken from the 1995 album Dick Delicious & The Tasty Testicles
Psychostick may have been the inspiration for this mix but this song was the first one I thought of next. I didn't have it on iTunes but managed to dig the CD out of storage in the attic. They're a comedic Party Metal band whose identities are a mystery, although they have apparently featured members of such bands as Brutal Truth, Mastodon and Nashville Pussy. The album I have is patchy but has a few gems on it. This song is about a man who goes all funny for a stripper and isn't half as dumb as it pretends to be. There's some pretty sharp rhymes and funny lines lurking within.

Jenny Owen Youngs - Fuck Was I
Taken from the 2005 album Batten The Hatches
This oddly titled track stands out from the rest of the songs on the mix as it's a pretty little love song about falling for a renowned love cheat and being surprised when it all goes wrong. I love the cello that runs through the song too.

W.A.S.P. - Animal (Fuck Like A Beast)
Taken from the 1984 album W.A.S.P.
"I got pictures of naked ladies, lying on their beds" is one of the greatest ever so-bad-it's-good opening lines to a song and I dunno if this song is Blackie Lawless boasting or if he's lamenting his lack of tenderness. It's all very Khal Drogo. Anyway, this song an early Glam Metal classic and probably their most well-known song if not their best.

Dirt Box Disco - My Life Is Shit
Taken from the 2014 album Peoplemadeofpaper
Dirt Box Disco are one of the best UK Punk bands around at the moment. This is the first song I heard by them and it's a good introduction should you also not have heard them before. The song itself is fairly self-explanatory; it's about not having a very good life...

Life, Sex & Death - Fuckin' Shit Ass
Taken from the 1992 album The Silent Majority
Three for the price of one with this song title, bargain! LSD were a Grunge/Alternative Metal band whose singer. Stanley. was supposedly homeless though it seems very much just a persona. This was kind of their anthem I guess. It's angry bitter song with a surprisingly positive and melodic chorus

Marilyn Manson - Rock n' Roll Nigger
Taken from the 1995 album Smells Like Children
His cover of a Patti Smith song that must have been pretty shocking back in 1978. It's a vitriolic rant about ostracism and it's lyrical theme of "Outside of society, that's where I want to be" fits Manson perfectly. His version is faster and more aggressive than his usual stuff and it's a great version.

Kick Joneses - In A Fucked Up City
Taken from the 2000 album Who Put The Voodoo Into Punk Rock?
The last time I included this German Punk band on a mix I said how I wasn't sure how I originally stumbled across them cos I've had this album for a long time. I still don't.
In A Fucked Up City is a catchy song that's one of their slower songs but still a bouncy, catchy tune.

MC Chris - I'm A Fuckin' Wizard
Taken from the 2014 album Foreverrr
I like a bit of Hip Hop every now and then but find there's often not much I can relate to lyric-wise. Thankfully there's Nerdcore. Rappers and MC's, of which MC Chris is one of the more prominent, who rap about D&D, Sci-Fi, comics and other such things that are primarily the domain of tubby white folk who can't do the sports. I'm a Fuckin' Wizard is mostly about pwning noobs on World Of Warcraft, which I can't do either.

 The Darkness - Wanker
Taken from the 2005 single One Way Ticket
This old B-side is a lively, 70's Glam-esque rocker that is probably better than half the songs on the album it was a B-Side for. It's about being a serial cheater and being sad about that. I know I said that the W.A.S.P. song had a classic opening line but it might have a rival here with the mighty "It was a hot day, and there were boobies ahoy".

Dead Kennedys - Too Drunk To Fuck
Taken from the 1987 album Give Me Convenience Or Give Me Death
Originally released as a single in 1981 and it's a proper Punk classic.East Bay Ray churns out an engaging, almost Surf Punk riff and Jello Biafra warbles along in his signature, er, warble. It's not a song with any deep, hidden message or anything, just a bloke who drinks far too too much at a party but it's definitely one of the band's best songs and holds up well.

The Assholes - Eat Shit And Die
Taken from the 2004 album Broke Americans
I bought this album on a whim over 15 years ago now and, while it's patchy in places, there's some good songs on it and it's a pleasantly offensive listen. The Assholes were (are?) a Party Rock band from L.A. that changed their name to Broke Americans do have a better crack at fame, I'm assuming they were unsuccessful.
Eat Shit And Die is the opening track on what I think was their only album, It's about a break-up and I feel like they are trying to convey an emotion but it's very subtle and hard to fathom.

Random Hand - Dynamo Penis Death Bastard
Taken from the 2007 album Change Of Plan
I first came across Random Hand in about 2004/2005 when they supported Babar Luck off of King Prawn (3rd on the bill was the massive loon, Captain Hotknives) and I loved their blend of Punk. Ska and Metal. This is the one song I remember Robin introducing, if only because the title is ridiculous. They sadly bowed out in 2015 with their quality 4th album Hit Reset.

Bowling For Soup - Don't Be A Dick
Taken from the 2016 album Drunk Dynasty
BFS have been churning out excellent Pop Punk for almost 25 years now but are still only known for that one song. You know which song. Last year's Drunk Dynasty was great although, and I know it's ironic considering this post, but I felt it had too much unnecessary bad language. It meant I couldn't listen to it at work, for one thing. Anyway yeah, they're a good band.

Super Furry Animals - The Man Don't Give A Fuck
Taken from the 1996 album Outspaced
This notorious single by these Progressive Indie Rockers from Wales obviously didn't get much airplay at the time but it perfectly highlights what I was trying to say with this mix. It was released as a single to point out how people shouldn't really be offended by swearing these days and the obsolescence of censorship. I've also just discovered it's main mantra of "You know they don't give a fuck about anybody else" is a sample of a Steely Dan song. Well I never! It's also very catchy and you'll be singing it to yourself at the most inappropriate of moments.

I can't believe I spelt obsolescence right on my first go!

Rocket From The Crypt - Bucket Of Piss
Taken from the 2002 album Live From Camp X-Ray
It's about time we had another album from RFTC. The Rock and Roll influenced Punk band split in 2005 but reformed, on and off, in 2011. That's ample time to record something new, chaps! This song is from their last proper album, Live From Camp X-Ray which isn't actually live at all. The big fibbers.

Ballboy - All The Records On The Radio Are Shite...
Taken from the 2002 EP All The Records On The Radio Are Shite...
It seems like all of Ballboy's twee Indie songs are about either unrequited love or relationship break-ups. This song, and you'd be forgiven for thinking it was about how rubbish popular music is, is about a relationship break-up. Also the word, Shite, is underused in music these days. It has so much more charm than either Shit or Fuck and can easily replace both of them "What the shite is this shite?!" for example.

Consumed - Twat Called Maurice
Taken from the 1999 album Hit For Six
This is probably the (comparatively!) most well known song by Nottingham Punks, Consumed. It was included on a Fat Wreck Chords compilation around the time they were signed to that label and it's certainly the way that I discovered them. The Maurice in question appears to be the Dad (or Step-Dad) of the singer and, presumably not very nice. Also, twat is another word that doesn't get used enough in songs too. Additionally I find it weird and uncomfortable when Americans rhyme it with what instead of that.

AJJ - You Don't Want To Fuck With Me
Taken from the 2011 album Candy Cigarettes, Capguns, Issue Problems! And Such
Right up until the release of their Sixthish album The Bible 2 last year, AJJ were known as Andrew Jackson Jihad. They apparently changed it because they a) didn't want to be associated with Andrew Jackson any longer, I'm not sure what changed. and b) given today's tender political climate, they didn't feel they had the right to bandying about the word Jihad. Fair enough I suppose. This song is typical of their anarchic, chaotic Folk Punk and it seems to be about the way men generally have to put up some sort of hard man front when they, quite clearly, aren't hard men. I might be completely wrong about that but that's how I sees it.

Ben Folds - Bitch Went Nuts
Taken from the 2008 album Way To Normal
Yet another break-up song and another relationship ending messily. Nobody ever writes songs about amicable splits, it's almost as if misery sells. Way To Normal is one of a handful of solo albums Ben released between Ben Folds Five splitting and Ben Folds Five reforming. Both Ben Folds and Ben Folds Five sound exactly the same!

Diemonds - Get The Fuck Outta Here
Taken from the 2012 album The Bad Pack
Diemonds are a gritty, Punk-influenced Hard Rock band from Canada, this was one of the singles (or at least, a song they made a video for) from their debut album. Their last, Never Wanna Die, was released in 2015 and I really enjoyed it. Both albums are full of memorable tunes and Priya is a capable vocalist and eye-catching frontwoman. Is frontwoman the right word? It doesn't look it. Anyway, she's a great band leader and hopefully, with their next album, they'll get some serious notice worldwide.
